COVID-19 and Your Water Heater

20 Second Proper Hand Washing Song

With the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) wreaking fear and uncertainty everywhere, the single most important thing that we can do to prevent spreading the virus is to wash our hands. Proper hand washing protocol advises at least 20 seconds of thorough washing with soap. To remind ourselves of how long 20 seconds is, we found this cute video that takes you through the proper technique AND it is 20 seconds long to make it easier for you!

What the song doesn’t say is how important the first step is in hand washing. The first step is to turn on the hot water at your sink. The temperature of the water for good hand washing is 120 degrees F. Get your hands thoroughly wet with the hot water and then, turn off the water. Twenty seconds is the recommended time to wash your hands and twenty seconds is a long time to be running the hot water unnecessarily. With wet hands and the water turned off, start soaping up your hands and begin singing.

Check for Leaking Faucets

Leaky faucets can waste many gallons of hot water a month and put a drain (pun intended) on your water heater. If you would like to repair the leaking faucet yourself, you first need to know what type of faucet you have. Once you know the type of faucet you have, you will find that this is where YouTube comes in handy. If you have a cartridge type faucet, you might want to watch this video from Ask This Old House. If you have a compression washer type of faucet, Ask This Old House comes to the rescue again. Finally, if you have a ball-type faucet, here’s another helpful video.

Change to Low Flow Shower Heads

Older shower heads can use a wasteful 6 to 10 gallons of hot water per minute!! Fortunately, shower heads today are better at saving your water heater by being able to provide a comfortable shower with only 2.2 gallons of water a minute, therefore, if you still have an older shower head, consider changing to a low flow shower head and save hot water AND unnecessary wear and tear on your water heater.

One of our amazing certified technicians found this situation at a job he was assigned. It looked like a DIY nightmare but it could have become a DIY nightmare if our technician hadn’t found that the INSTRUCTIONS for the flexible vent was still IN the vent burning up! Luckily he caught it before a fire!

YIKES!

By installing the venting the correct way we prevented a possible carbon monoxide situation.

Thanks to Hot Water 911, they all lived happily ever after!
